AIM Cassette Insert

An insert for cassette type cladding panels providing a suitable substrate for cavity barriers to abut.

PRODUCT

The AIM Cassette Insert is a cut strip of high density Rockwool Stonewool which is factory cut to suit the dimensions of the cassette cladding panel that it is required to fill.

The AIM Cassette Insert is applied to the inner surface of the cassette panel to provide a suitable surface for the cavity barrier to close up to by removing obstructions such as the returns on the sides of cassette panels.

APPLICATIONS

Cassette panels are a common rainscreen façade. This creates an issue with the installation and performance of cavity barriers. In the case of horizontal barriers, often with open state cavity barriers, the vertical rails, or the returns in the cassette panel prevent the free expansion of the intumescent strip.

Where a vertical cavity barrier (often a full fill cavity barrier) is used it cannot easily be notched to accept the panels without leaving gaps and voids. These gaps are invisible from the outside of the construction and may go un-noticed.

AIM Cassette Inserts may be used within Cassette Façade Panels to create a flat surface for the OSCB to close against or for the Wall Cavity Barrier to abut provide a tight and full seal

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

There is evidence (Section 3 Table 2 Specimen A in WF 547452) that an AIM Cassette insert is successful in narrowing the cavity width when placed opposite the OSCB 44. Since this cassette insert has worked with OSCB 44 which is designed to fill larger gaps than OSCB 25 but has the same stonewool support, it is the view of KIWA Fire Safety (KFS) that the cassette insert will work satisfactorily with OSCB 25.

Test Report WF547452 refers Sensors were placed on the barrier and Cassette Insert.

The test results achieved were:

  • On the barrier: 120 minutes integrity / 60 minutes insulation
  • On the Cassette Insert: 120 minutes integrity / 60 minutes insulation


Cassette Inserts can be adhered in situ with a suitable adhesive and mechanical support can be provided by adding screws through the top and bottom of the cassette panels, into the ends of the inserts, for added security.

The Ad-Hoc test used a 100mm thick Wall Cavity Barrier (Red Edition) within a 300mm cavity which closed up to an AIM Cassette Insert fitted within a replicated cassette panel as shown in the drawings.

INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

AIM Cassette Insert should be installed in accordance with the Fixing Instructions supplied with every order.

OSCB WITH AIM CASSETTE INSERT

  • Fit the OSCB and support system in the usual manner.
  • Offer the cassette panel into position, mark the cavity barrier line on the inside of the panel.
  • Fit the AIM Cassette insert and adhere it in situ using a suitable adhesive.
  • Colour matching securing screws (matching to the cladding panel) can be added through the sides of the cassette panel, into the
    ends of the AIM Cassette Insert to provide mechanical support.

WALL CAVITY BARRIER (RED EDITION) WITH AIM CASSETTE INSERT

  • AIM Cassette Inserts are factory cut to suit the thickness of the cassette panel in 1000mm or 1200mm lengths.
  • Cut the inserts length so that it completely fills the height of the cassette panel.
  • Adhere the insert in situ using a suitable adhesive or intumescent mastic.
  • If mechanical support is required, a colour coded screw can be inserted through the top and bottom of the cassette panel, into
    the ends of the cassette insert.

GENERAL STORAGE AND HANDLING

  • Suitable handling equipment will be required for bulky products or pallets.
  • Products are supplied on wooden pallets with edge protection and a shower proof hood.
  • Products should be stored away from the elements until ready for installation.
  • Store on flat ground stacked no more than two pallets high.

OPERATION & MAINTENANCE

This product does not contain moving parts and, if undisturbed requires no routine inspections or maintenance.

DURABILITY

AIM fire barriers are chemically inert, will not sustain vermin and do not encourage the growth of rot, fungi, moulds or bacteria. They are compatible with all normal building materials. They do not degrade under the usual conditions found in buildings and will perform effectively for the life of the building.

HEALTH & SAFETY

  • as an article there is no requirement for a Safety Data Sheet.
  • follow appropriate material handling methods using suitable PPE for site hazards.
  • dry working by cutting or drilling of:
    • non-encapsulated rock or mineral wool may release fibre dust (MMMF).
  • “MMMF” has workplace exposure limits listed in HSE EH40.
  • where possible use on tool dust extraction with HEPA filter

PACKAGING & PRODUCT DISPOSAL

  • Pallets can be readily re-used.
  • Pallet wrap / covers should be placed in an appropriate waste stream.
  • The product remains in the construction until refurbishment or demolition as such the project lead should apply the contemporary national and local regulations for waste bearing in mind site and installation contaminants.
